Newtownforbes gets its name from the Forbes family who settled here in the 17th century. Prior to this the village was called Lios Breac. The village is beautifully maintained and consists of three churches, Saint Mary’s, St. Paul’s and the church once used by the Sisters of Mercy.
We have two supermarkets, a Post Office, three pubs, a butcher’s, a hairdressers, a barber’s shop and a take away. There are quite a number of residential houses on the main street, many were built originally to house those working in the castle.
The main entrance to Castleforbes is in the centre of the village. This is a magnificent castle but hidden from view, the grounds of which are opened to the public occasionally.
