Welcome to the Scoil Mhuire Website
The aim of Scoil Mhuire is to be a Christian community of learning, having a Catholic ethos while also accommodating the beliefs and traditions of others. Newtownforbes is situated approximately 3 miles from Longford on the Sligo road. It is a very picturesque village, the population of which has grown significantly over the past number of years. It grew up around the estate of the Forbes family who came to live here in the 19th century.
Originally, a one-roomed school was built in 1961, which catered for the education of boys from 2nd to 6th class. In 1969, a four-roomed pre-fabricated structure was erected following the amalgamation of some local two-teacher schools. A new 3-teacher school was erected in 1981 to replace this pre-fabricated school. Extensions were added to this in 1993, 2007 and 2015. The school engages in many extra-curricular activities. The pupils are encouraged to take part in football, hurling, soccer, athletics and swimmingcompetitions and have been awarded County titles for both boys and girls.
We pride ourselves in keeping our school environment to a very high standard. We have received five Green flag Awards to date. The classrooms are very pleasant, well decorated and very well maintained. The school prides itself in providing excellent education for its students while promoting a philosophy of mutual respect for all.

Welcome to Scoil Mhuire, Newtownforbes. Scoil Mhuire currently has 366 pupils which caters for Newtownforbes and children from the surrounding areas. It started out as the ‘Scoil ar an gCnoc’, (school on the hill) in the 1960’s which is still on the present school grounds and has grown and developed over the years. We are due to further expand with the development of 4 new classrooms which will be build over the next year. It is my pleasure to be the Principal here since September 2019. Scoil Mhuire is an excellent modern Primary school with a hard working and enthusiastic staff. We enjoy very positive support from parents and local community which makes the education of the children broad and well balanced. The school has a long record of achievements in sports and various whole school projects. We have recently undergone a Department of Education Whole School evaluation which has positively affirmed our good work. It is our goal to continue serving the local community and providing a safe and happy environment that will give a well rounded education to each and every child. We hope that you find the information provided here useful and that you and your child continue to have a fruitful and happy experience of school life here. |
